The AI Tree

The AI Tree

Most people think of AI skill as a ladder. It works more like a tree.

There's a trunk: a handful of core habits that make everything else work. Once that trunk is solid, people stop climbing and start branching. A marketer, an analyst, and an ops lead might all be strong AI users and look nothing alike.

This quiz figures out two things: how far up the tree you've grown, and which way you branch. It takes about 8 to 10 minutes. There are no trick questions, and there's no prize for scoring high. Describe how you actually work and see where you land.

What is the AI Tree?

The AI Tree is a way of thinking about AI skill that doesn't treat it as a ladder. Everyone builds the same trunk first: describing what they want clearly, giving AI real material to work with, and judging what comes back. After that, people branch in different directions depending on their work. A writer, an analyst, and an operations lead can all be strong AI users and work in completely different ways.

The quiz places you on one of four levels and one of four branches.

The four levels

  • Explorer: Uses AI like a very smart search box. Growing the roots.
  • Builder: Hands AI real material and has built things they use. The trunk.
  • Connector: AI is wired into their tools; others use what they build. For most roles, the destination.
  • Orchestrator: Builds the connectors, agents, and scheduled jobs. Optional, and valuable in every department.

The four branches

  • Maker: builds tools, templates, and prototypes.
  • Analyst: researches, compares, and finds patterns.
  • Communicator: drafts, edits, and shapes messages.
  • Systematizer: designs processes and keeps things running.

Questions

What are the four levels of AI skill?
Explorer, Builder, Connector, and Orchestrator. Explorers use AI like a search tool. Builders give it real context and have made things they use. Connectors wire AI into their other tools. Orchestrators build custom connectors and automations.
Is Orchestrator the goal?
No. For most roles, Connector is the realistic destination; it covers nearly everything AI can do for day-to-day work. Orchestrator is optional, though every organization benefits from a few.
Does this quiz use AI to score me?
No. Scoring is a fixed rubric that runs in your browser.
Do you store my answers?
No. Your answers never leave your browser. If you ask us to email your results, we send the email and don't keep your address.
How long does it take?
About 8 to 10 minutes.
